D.O.W. Jones was born in Brooklyn, New York, where he graduated from William E. Grady Vocational and Technical High School. During his high school days, he began gobbling up courses in Business Law, Economics, and Accounting. His relentless work ethic led him to become the salutatorian of his graduating class, as he also received a certificate in Business & Accounting.
Following high school, Jones received a Bachelor’s degree from The City University of New York at Brooklyn College after earning The New York State and The New York City Merit scholarships. As a Dean’s List scholar, Jones studied Mass Media and Journalism. He later wrote for his college newspaper – The Excelsior, and went on to write for Foxsports.com, Fightnews.com, Boxingscene.com, and other websites, where he covered boxing.
Jones did not only involve himself in boxing as journalist, but he was a sizzling amateur boxer during the late 1990’s, where he excited the New York crowd in the Golden Gloves, the Empire State Games, and at the age of 18, he became one of the youngest super-heavyweight amateur champions, when he won the New York State Metropolitan Games Championship. And as an intelligent boxer, he was the recipient of The Joey Fariello Memorial Scholarship for Boxing and Scholastic Excellence.
